A one-night-only live burlesque extravaganza brings Wink stars and Portland peelers together to watch and celebrate the new documentary about ten ordinary women who do something extraordinary — learn the art of the striptease.
Doors open at 7pm with the film starting at 8pm. Cocktails and complimentary absinthe precede the live show at 10pm.
Seattle producer and emcee extraordinaire, Paula The Swedish Housewife, welcomes the star of our film, Miss Indigo Blue, and some of our starlets The Shanghai Pearl, Ernie von Schmaltz (Rarr!), Honey Moon, Mercury Troy and Gams Galore. And Portland’s own burlesque princess Sahara Dunes and the hottest boylesque troupe — dare we say, in the world — NANDA, will join the hip-shaking hoopla and make you gasp with glee at the glory of nekkid rumpshakery!
Director Deirdre Timmons will be on hand for the fun (just in case you had any serious filmic questions).
Portland’s Integrity Sprits, maker of Trillium Absinthe Superieure (Oprah brought it to President Obama’s Inauguration Ball), is supplying the evening with a nip for all guests ages 21 and older.
An intoxicating mix of private yearnings and public spectacle, A Wink and a Smile exposes more than the human body by putting gender, power, and sexuality under the spotlight as students of Seattle’s Academy of Burlesque have just six weeks to peel and reveal their hidden talents with little more than a tassel and a twirl. Seasoned burlesque divas strut on stage in their own entertaining, satirical and beautiful performances to illustrate the candid and often hilarious lectures by the Academy’s headmistress, Miss Indigo Blue.
As director Deirdre Timmons draws back the velvet curtain providing a rare glimpse into the intimate experience, audiences watch with glee as Miss Indigo’s budding divas learn to shimmy, shake, bump and grind their way into our hearts. Through their adventures, we see how a homemaker, a reporter, a doctor, an opera singer, a taxidermist and a college student join the American cultural revival of burlesque, as it moves from fringe fascination to mainstream obsession, engaging a world where performance art and showgirl spectacle, music, theater and sensuality crash into over-the-top glamour – a world where many want to go, but very few dare.
Portland’s own 3 LEG TORSO will be in attendance as they provide the opening song in the film.
